Ross Aftel is a percussionist,
musicologist, composer, conductor, and archivist for the Emerson String
Quartet. As a percussionist, he has collaborated and premiered works by
composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, 徐儀, Malika Kishino,
Akiko Yamane, Agata Zubel, Szilard Mezei, Tomoko Momiyama, and many others. His
most recent music project has been the development of new repertoire for 雲鑼. He has composed theater, dance, jazz, and electroacoustic music.
As a conductor, he directed the US premiere of the 90-minute film score from 徐儀 for the 1927 Shanghai film, 「神女」. As a
musicologist, he has shared his research on disability in music performance,
Chinese aesthetics in performance studies, and inclusion in music pedagogy
throughout the US and Taiwan. Later this year, Ross will be doing the Asia
premiere of Stockhausen’s STRAHLEN in Taipei, and a recital at the Taichung
National Theater.
